Day 49 - Fri, June 12th, 10:26
PM Best Western - Battle Mountain, Nevada Distance Today: 445 miles - Total Distance: 6211 miles Today was all driving. Just driving, a little more driving, some more driving, even more driving and... oh yeah... there was a bit of driving in there too. I crossed the California/Nevada border for the last time, leaving California behind me until I return there again some day in the distant future. Crossing the border this time wasn't as exciting as last time, though. No giant man-made dams with hour-long tours to take. Oh well. I'm trying to decide which way I should go to get to Yellowstone. I can either drive east until I reach Salt Lake City, then start heading north, or I can head north at Wells, Nevada and onto a smaller highway which passes through a few unusually named towns. (I'm always looking for unusually named towns.) One town in particular, which seems to be a ghost town, is named Henry. This will be the first time I'd visit anywhere in the U.S. named Henry. I've passed within miles of a dozen or so other towns named Henry while driving across the country, but I never got to see any of them. So... maybe I'll go that way. I mean.. I'm practically right there, and how often do you find a ghost town with your name? Maybe I'll find some old "Welcome to Henry - Population 65 - Founded 1868" sign dangling on a stick, hanging on by a single screw. That'd be cool. I'm rambling, aren't I? Anyhow, not much to say about today. I sped by Reno at 70 MPH. I figured I won enough already and probably used up all my luck in Vegas anyhow, so why bother stopping? Been there. Done that. It'd be great if I could reach Yellowstone by tomorrow evening. I knew this drive would either take two or three days. I'll just have to wait and see. Oh! I almost forgot. Today I found the answer to a question I've had for about the last twenty years. Every year since I was one year old, my family has spent the summertime (usually a week or so) in Ocean City, Maryland. Route 50 ends in Ocean City. At the other end of 50, it ends in Sacramento, California. There's a sign hanging over the highway in OC that says Sacramento - 3073 miles. So I'd always wondered if there was a sign that said the same at this end, but with Ocean City, Maryland on it. Well, indeed there was! If you were anywhere near my car, you would have heard me laughing even though my windows were all rolled up. Now all I have left to figure out is the answer to life and the exact location of the Holy Grail, and I'm done. I'm going to get myself a good night's rest, so without further adu... See you on the road...
